Spiral Bauble Garland Pattern

The crocheted corkscrew reminds me first of the many hair ties Mama Mac made me back in the early 80’s. I loved the way the corkscrews felt bobbling around in my pony tail. So girly! That use of the corkscrew has found it’s way into the Crochet Hall of Shame alongside toilet paper covers and granny squares. I wouldn’t be Mama Mac’s great granddaughter if I didn’t enjoy fascinated walks in the Crochet Hall of Shame. From my time in that acrylic filled hall, I bring you this little diddy:

Working too many stitches into each chain stitch overloads the chains, forcing the fabric to turn and spiral.
Spirals (also known as Corkscrews) can look like flowerlets or crazy corksrews. It’s simple and fun to make a garland this way.

Spiral Bauble Garland

Yes, it’s more commonly called a corksrew. Just say “Spiral Bauble” five times fast and enjoy that it’s simply a funner title!

Materials:
Any yarn and appropriate hook. Working with two yarns of contrasting colors held together makes a fun garland. Try a variegated yarn with a solid yarn… This is also a great use for that metallic yarn you couldn’t resist but don’t know what to do with.

I used:
Patons Grace, 2 skeins in contrasting colors
G/ 4.50mm hook

Stitches and Techniques:
Chain (CH)
Single Crochet (SC)
Slip Stitch

The Pattern:
CH 20

Work 4 SC into the 2nd chain from the hook, 6 SC into the next chain, 4 SC into the next chain. Continue to work 4 SC into each of the next 3 chain stitches until the bauble is the desired size, slip stitch into the next chain.

CH any number of chains, keeping in mind you need to create enough chains for the space you want between baubles PLUS the number of chains you need for the bauble itself.

*To experiment with shorter or longer baubles, simply change the number of chains you use for each bauble.

*Play with the number of SC worked into each chain. I dare you to push the boundaries and make up your own wild spiraling corkscrewing bauble shapes.

*The garland looks best when the spaces and bauble sizes are random. So have fun!
