Saturday Morning

I have a baby shower to attend later today. I don’t have a real present! I will also have to scramble to get together the dessert I promised to bring. I was going to make fudge, but discovered at midnight last night I had no evaporated milk! So today is all about getting resourceful so that my good friend gets the baby shower bits and trinkets that she deserves.

The new baby’s name will be Zoe.

The initial inspiration for this little scribble of embroidery came in the first few minutes of watching Ugly Betty (I adore Ugly Betty!!!! The show is so quirky and brightly colored that it has to bring out your crafty side. I think I may throw an Ugly Betty crafting party sometime in the nearish future). Ugly Betty wears a necklace with a proud goofy “B” on it. This jumped into my head alongside the dilemna of having nothing for this baby shower. Soon I had one of my favorite happy yarns thread into a tapestry needle and some teal craft felt in my hand. This is what came out:

The happy yarn in question is Noro’s Sakura, this stuff is like candy and it makes me tremendously happy. The Z and the E were made using a backstitch. The O was made using a section of the yarn that is wrapped with thread, too bulky to drag through fabric with a needle, but too cool looking to not use. Besides, I was freehanding this and an O shape would have taken a while to get right. So I shaped the O, pulled the ends through the felt and tied them in the back. Then I braced the O shape with orange embroidery floss. To brighten up the Z, I wove the same orange embroidery floss through the stitches. I crocheted a little circle to add to the piece, and Voila!

…. a piece of random craft felt with a name embroidered on it. As cute as I may think it is, hardly a finished item proper for a typical gift. I thought I’d give it to my friend in the form of a patch that she could attach to whatever she likes. On second thought I’ve decided to give it to her with a note saying I will make something of her choosing with it, that way she gets a choice of how this quirky little thing is used, but doesn’t have to do the work herself. She’s busy enough with being a Mom and all.

Sunday Doodles

Sitting in my cozy new corner playing with my spirograph…

The spirograph soothes me. It’s a way of simply making appealing doodles and falling into mindless repetition and letting my brain work out anxious kinks.

A lot of my anxious kinks are tied to ideas. I get a vague inspiration and then it runs in ten directions at once and I can’t focus down on any one thing. It’s like craving chocolate ice cream and tacos and eight other contradictory flavors all at once. It’s easy to become exhausted and confused and never take the steps to realize any of these ideas. So doodling always helps calm my twitching thoughts…

I looked up from sprirograph and found a tray of yarn right in my eyeline. I felt a few more ideas come over me and started to get anxious. Then a little voice in my head told me, “You don’t have to try to make every idea…”

I obviously don’t make every idea into something, but it is very hard to let go. Once it’s been glimpsed in my mind at all it’s so easy to add it to a long list of ideas I get to flog myself for not bringing to completion. So this thought that an idea can be an idea and simply left alone … if I can embrace that, I’ll probably be a less anxious person.

Roses in the sink… a lovely day at the Sweet house (erm apartment)

We’re very lucky to live in a place with a gorgeous and fruitful rose garden. This last week a bit of rain sort of knocked things around out there. When a bush full of rose blooms sits in the rain all the blooms catch water and become heavy. This caused part of one of my favorite rose bushes to fully fall over. I’m glad to say I saved that section of the bush from the gardener’s sometimes mercilless pruning shears by removing a lot of the blooms. Enough blooms and stems in fact that the task of cleaning them up and arranging them was daunting. I put them in the guest bathroom sink and promised them I’d return later to clean them up.

I didn’t so much forget as just get busy with other things…

Rob came home from work and opened the bathroom door to find the display in the sink. He seemed to find it a pleasant suprise. Or at least one of the best odd things he could come home to find in the bathroom sink and he embraced the idea.
It’s pretty fun to open the door to a usually blah room and find a bunch of pink roses!

The roses seem to like their place too, so that’s where they’ll stay. Hopefully I’ll remember to remove them before it becomes a rose swamp.

Sleep Deprived

I have been up all night playing with swatches. I usually take photos of my experiments in natural light. But there that doesn’t work so well in the middle of the night. I had a ton of fun coming up with ways to get an interesting record of swatches using the scanner. Then I finished the work that I actually needed to finish by this morning and now I can’t sleep.

Photoshop is far too easy to play with even when sleep deprived and wired.  I took my “natural-ish” looking scans and did a lot of random clicking to get these images.
Forgive me. I know photoshop fun can turn tacky on a dime. Forgive me if this is tacky. I like it. We’ll see what I think when I wake up.

I think it might be fun to break one of these down to inspire shapes in a blanket design…

When are these gizmos going to be let free so that crafty folk can really put them to stylish use?

Okay. Here it is. Thanks to Audex and Soft Switch speakers, buttons, wireless, and all else you need to have a snowboarding jacket that acts like a part of your cellphone or ipod are ready and on sale now…. I think this is so very really cool! But here is where I whine, I want these finished gadgets available Radio Shack style so that I can play with making things for them! I’m not a gizmo maker. I just want to crochet around the gizmos!

For the fiber whore in you I provide this tantalizing info from the Soft Switch site:

“SOFTswitch fabrics are ‘touch sensitive’ – when mechanically distorted or compressed they exhibit a large change in Ohmic resistance that is proportional to the force applied. This proportional response allows SOFTswitch fabrics to be used effectively both as switches and pressure sensors, responding to the lightest touch or the hardest hammer blow.”

…. fabric that feels your touch… so cool.

Bits of advice for throwing your own Rollerskating Birthday Party:

Everyone had a blast at my rollerskating party. I’m already planning on buying my own pair of skates and attending a monthly rollerboogie night. I wish that you may all know rollerskates and cupcakes and joy in your birthday parties!

Find a roller rink. It’s amazing, but not only are they still around, some of these rinks sport the same style they were built with decades ago. That’s right! Carpeted wall murals of planets and rollerskates! Do your research. A lot of rinks have a special themed night like “80’s” night, perfect for a carefree party.

When you speak to a rink:

Ask for their schedule and what the average crowd for various events might be. It seems that at most rinks daytimes are for kids and families, evenings are for younger teenagers, and later nights are for adults only. We chose a monthly event called “Space is the Place” at World on Wheels. The event is so popular that people who arrived 10 minutes after the doors opened were in line for 40 minutes and the joint eventually ran out of skates. Yes, I birthday partied amongst a throng of hipsters… hipster cooties!

Tell them you want to host a party.
Some rinks offer a party package that includes cover charge and skate rental for a number of your pals. There’s often a cheaper fee to simply bring in food. That’s the option we chose. So my friends did have to pay to get in, but no one seemed to mind.

Ask about the music. Is this a club type event with a DJ mixing the tunes? Are you allowed to request that perfect Rollerskating song?

Go ahead and check the place out in person. You need to practice your skating skills anyway!

The food! It goes without saying, bring what you like! Folks were pretty respectful of the “Birthday Tables” that the different birthday parties had staked out that night. We did catch one stranger who thought he should have one of my cupcakes. And our stash of water bottles drew a lot of attention as the skating crowd grew sweatier… One stranger offered us 2 dollars for one bottle…

Here’s what you need to set the scene for your birthday table:

* Paper Table Cloths in your favorite color
* Disposable Plates, Cups, Napkins, and Utensils
* Your favorite sweet treat. I went all the way with my cupcakes. We honestly didn’t do anything too fancy to decorate my table, we let the precious yummy cupcakes do the talking.
* Small candies that folks can grab and run back to the rink
* A case of small water bottles
* Try to keep someone at the table at all times to keep an eye on things.

Extras:
The sky is the limit as far as decorating goes. Go wild! Balloons are a useful and easy way to mark your territory. Like I said, we didn’t go so far with the decorating. The ladies at the table next to us did (see the photo above). I don’t know their names, but I will always think of them as “The Tiffany’s” thanks to their awesome 80’s get ups! The were totally decked with balloons and bright decorations.

Here is the genius bit. You know those portable, battery operated tap lights? They had a few of those at the table! Take one of these lights, place a clear plastic flat bottomed bowl upside down over the light and Voila! You can place your yummy snacks on top of the bowl to save surface space… It was a totally awesome effect. Yay for the Tiffanys!

Attire: Remind guests to wear/bring socks! Nobody wants to go barefoot in those rental skates! Also, once you’ve skated a few laps you’ll be bit warm. Dress accordingly. Remember, outfits that might be slightly silly with normal shoes can look awesome with skates…

Made by my great grandmother (aka: Flossie or “Mama Mac”).
She took some of her favorite costume jewelry apart and glued it to the white background, backed it with black velvet, and framed it in a big oval frame with domed glass.

As a child I would stand on the chair that sat underneath it and stare straight into it. I couldn’t stop staring. My mother and grandmother were slightly ashamed of the tackiness. I just couldn’t figure out what it was: Tacky? Beautiful? I’ve decided it’s the synergy of both. Now I’ve inherited it, it has moved to California with me and I still stare at it…

Coming to a neighborhood near you?

Okay, I have to learn how to make these to mix with some good old fashion crocheted and knitted bits…

Video killed my self perception

I had intended to debut podcasts earlier this month.  For various reasons I’m behind schedule.  The biggest reason simply has to do with me and my own idiosyncrancy…

It’s simply hard to look at myself on video.  I’m always suprised by my profile, my constant hair tossing, and other quirks.  It’s hard to explain just how itchey and fidgeting, and sort of cranky I get when watching myself.  The funny thing is I’m fully aware that I’m a freak, but seeing the video proof of it is startling at times.

I’m doing my best to get over this though because idiosyncracy aside, I love the process of making content this way.  I’m very excited to be able to give everybody another fun way to explore crafty stuff…

So I’m working on this and promise something soon.
