A Simple Ikea Hack:
Lion Brand was very generous, they sent us a ton of yarn to use in our booth. How were we going to organize the yarn in an attractive way that still kept the plentiful supply at the fingertips of our eager crocheters and knitters? Shannon was at Ikea and I was standing in the booth space surrounded by boxes of yarn, so we shopped together via cell phone. She’d announce something she’d found and we’d brainstorm ways to use it, then discuss if it would really work in this booth space. She found the Ikea trash bag holders and suggested we use them attached to the back wall of the booth, but there wasn’t enough space on the booth wall. I convinced her they’d work laying on their backs and begged her to buy a lot of them…

The idea blossomed the next morning when we stuffed the containers with a variety of yarns with the center pull tails strung through the holes. It worked! The set up survived two days and a ton of people using the yarn to knit and crochet.
We also had a lot of fun brainstorming even more ways to use these awesome containers. One suggestion: close the open end and trap a cat toy inside to provide your bored kitty with a challenge. I brought several of them home with me, more later on what I come up with them. I just hope the one I’ve used for 2 years as a boring old trash bag holder doesn’t get jealous!

No pictures today. I’m too lazy to load and then pick through the bazillion pictures we took this weekend. We’re heading even further into Northern California today for a day in the Redwoods. I’ll resurface again on Wednesday with my sum up of the fantastic Maker Faire weekend. It was a whirlwind of yarn and hooks and eager hands in our little corner of the Faire. Away from the yarn and hooks, I had a great time meeting enthusiastic people of all sorts. Totally amazing!
Quick Notes on the Weekend:
-Found a new use for a simple Ikea product (pictures and more to come)
-I taught more people to crochet in 2 short days than I have in over a year!
-Had a great time discussing the effects of technology on crafts (while eating tacos) with people who don’t craft at all but found it interesting anyway…
More Later…
More later…

This hotel rocks…

We arrived around 11pm and stumbled into the cleanest and newest smelling hotel room I’ve ever witnessed. It totally rocks! Among the many wonders: outlets in the wall for all sorts of things like memory cards and usb that talk to the flatscreen teevee, a laptop friendly safe that includes an outlet so you can charge your laptop while you have it locked safely away, and the nicest hotel hand soap in the world. Then there’s the bed, it’s pretty nice too.
The weirdest part: this huge place is still being remodeled, just doors away from our room there’s a sort of void land of gutted hallway. It’s not gross or creepy though. It just makes me feel like I live on a space station that’s slowly being built outward…
Ahhhh, I think I’ll drag Rob to the pool. I want to dangle my feet in the water.

Even though we got a late start on the drive and travelled a whopping 11 miles in the first hour (yay rush hour traffic!) we had a pleasant trip. The kind where you talk about your goals, your wishes, and what kinds of legacy you’d like to leave to the world. Just the kinds of chats to get you ready for a weekend full of people who follow their whimsies to build interesting projects.
Come on inspiration and amazement! We’re ready!

I’ve been spending perhaps far too much time home alone lately. Rob’s been working 7 days a week for some client and I hardly see him, I went on a reclusive binge (something I am far too capable of anyway), and I’ve been rethinking my life’s pursuits anyway…. so I’ve gone a bit stir crazy. Today he IMs me from said client’s office to say that one of the folks in the office has an amigurumi making wife. I coolly ask for the requisite link to a flickr, blog, anything online… Turns out she’s simply too cool.
Just check this out — had me laughing out loud. I’ve resisted the Blythe thing because a)I’d hate to hurt my Audrey Hepburn Barbie’s feelings, b) I have more imaginary friends tangible and intangible than I can keep up with and any day now the Imaginary Friends Social Services might haul me in for neglect. Yes, I too have a shelf of unused, purdy sketchbooks and journals, a My Little Pony on my desk, and a yarn collection.
Good to know when sitting in my lil Crochet Hermitage that I’ve got company in the world…
Today’s pursuits: as many loads of laundry as possible, work on little how to book number two, getting stuff together for maker faire demos, working on stuff for the Larger Than Life CAL.
